Health And Safety
To promote optimum health and safety within the organisation, we have undertaken the following initiatives:

  • In line with the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, appointed the Chief Executive Officer as our S 16.1 appointee and the Chief Operating Officer as the S16.2 appointee. Various senior managers have also been appointed S16.2 appointees for their respective operational areas. All these appointments are maintained and updated on the intranet for staff reference
  • Supporting the above legal appointments, implemented safety committees at all our operational sites, including first aiders, fire fighters and evacuation marshals. Our Risk Manager is responsible for occupational health and safety not only in the buildings we occupy but also those we operate and manage. Each year, emergency procedures are rehearsed and all first aid and safety officers are retrained within the statutory intervals
  • Regular safety inspections. Any incidents that occur are fully investigated by the safety officer concerned and reported through the safety committees to the Risk Manager and the Risk Management Committee of the board. During the 2008/09 year, Growthpoint staff had five health and safety incidents, with none resulting in lost working time or hospitalisation
  • In terms of the buildings we own and operate, all security service providers are required to conduct an annual risk assessment. These service providers are also required in their service level agreements to provide emergency assistance and, together with the on-site safety officer, to take charge of any health and safety emergencies that may arise
  • A comprehensive risk register is maintained by the Risk Manager
HIV/AIDS approach
Within Growthpoint, HIV/AIDS, like any other life threatening disease, is dealt with in terms of our broader approach to health and wellness, and more specifically in terms of our disability policy. Our approach encompasses the following:

  • Our Human Resources policy states that “Employees who disclose their HIV status or who are diagnosed as HIV/AIDS positive will not be prejudiced or discriminated against on account of their medical condition”
  • Our selection of corporate medical aid schemes, of which all staff are members, have been vetted to ensure they provide cover to members for HIV/AIDS in terms of both the Prescribed Minimum Benefits legislation and a comprehensive disease management programme for registered members.
  • Each year, wellness days are held throughout Growthpoint and staff have the opportunity to part take in voluntary counselling and testing jointly provided by health care providers and the Employee Assistance Programme
  • As part of the annual World Aids Day Celebration, a donation is made to HIV/AIDS organisations on a rotational basis
